Cardigan joys?

I hate to admit it, but I really don't get out all that much. My days are fairly routine, which have been nice for raising a puppy. Although, the last fews times I have decided to go for an evening out Ash has revolted against it. So let me back up, when I'm gone and he's unable to accompany me he is gated up in a small room - that connects to my bathroom. It's about the size of a small dog run. He has TONS of squeekies, chew toys, stuffed animals and tough bones to entertain himself with. And mostly they do the trick till I get home from work. BUT lately when I go out at night he chews the carpet! It's beginning to get pretty bad in there where he has now two corners pulled back. I've tried spraying it with bitter apple, putting extra treats and chewies in there with him, and he still goes after it. Please tell me that this is still just a puppy tendency?? Or do I need a metal room for him? Am I destined to lead the life of an agoraphobic hermit?

Guppy says plastic crates are our friends... And they will save carpets, cupboards and the latest destruction when we first got Miss Pearl, the MINI BLINDS that have lovely canine teeth imprints all over them!

Repeat after me . . .
Crates are our friends. Dogs like crates. We like crates.

Some Cardigans never outgrow the puppy stage of eating everything in the house . . . right Julie?

I've had 2 cardis now eat my carpet, for various reasons. The first was my fault, because I gave more freedom than he was ready for (he was about 9 months old at the time). The second, well there was garlic butter spilled on the carpet, and clearly the only solution there is to eat a hole in it.

I've also lost linoleum by having the edges pulled up.

The little room sounds great, but I would have marked the carpet as a trouble spot right away. :P Mine are in an xpen in my laundry room while we're gone, which actually isn't much these days since Dave and I both work from home. Even though the laundry room itself is small and generally safe, the xpen keeps them from eating baseboards, drywall, and flooring for the most part. If I didn't have that option though, crates it would be.

I know all pups teeth, but I guess I didn't realize that cardis in particular were so destructive! We use a crate at night and I suppose we'll start using it during the day- but I hope that eventually he can be trusted and given more freedom, perhaps in another year??

some don't even take that much time to be reliable... it all really depends on the dog. I'd try again at about 6-7 months or so... if he's still naughty, try again in a month. That's my theory. And if they keep screwing it up, back into crates they go. It doesn't generally last forever... Julie's a freak ;-)

We crate everybody, too. We have cats with claws and really like our cardis with eye balls, so that's a no go. Also, Libby will eat anything and she'll be 5 in September, Ethan makes confetti whenever he can get hold of paper, and Savannah...well, other than destroying toys, she hasn't had the opportunity to destroy anything else. We still have all linoleum, baseboards, and little bit of carpet in tact. Well, the carpet hasn't really done well with the cats, but that's another story. Damn cats!

Hannah ate the kitchen floor at 15 months..in the middle with no seams! So even when they seem good and solid they get ideas...
